“Providing Affordable, Quality Housing”

Our Story

In 2005, Salem Lutheran Church saw a greater purpose for its parking lot. The land, consisting of two half-blocks, was situated at the heart of Spokane’s West Central community: one of the poorest neighborhoods in a city that was steadily losing affordable housing options.

In an effort to “love thy neighbor”, Salem partnered with three other local Lutheran congregations to form Spokane Urban Ministries, and construct two apartment buildings on the donated land. The finished complex, Walnut Corners, opened its doors in 2009, with 47 low-income units.

Spokane Urban Ministries and its member congregations— Salem Lutheran, All Saints Lutheran, and St. Luke Lutheran— continue to play an active role in the management and operations of Walnut Corners. Through building maintenance, advocacy, and tenant engagement, Spokane Urban Ministries continues to strive towards its mission of “providing affordable, quality housing”.
